Installing the New Hard Drive

Step 5: Installing the New Hard Drive

(Click on the first thumbnail for detailed instructions)

  1. Take your new hard drive and make sure the jumpers are set properly, as Master (not Slave). Most of the time, it’s configured properly when you buy it, but look at the reference chart on the drive’s sticker to make sure that everything is OK.
  2. Reconnect the connector to the hard drive. Push equally on both sides and slide it on smoothly. Make sure that the pins are aligned correctly in the doles of the female connector.
  3. Put the plastic film on the new drive and replace the four rubber dampers using the four screws from the original drive.
  4. Replace the drive in the computer by sliding the left dampers in the round holes. Make sure that the dampers are correctly inserted in the round holes
  5. Press down gently on the right side of the drive so that the right dampers fit in the slots. Make sure the part of the damper that’s next to the disk isn’t squished.
  6. Replace the bar that holds down the drive, ensuring that the dampers aren’t squished by it.
  7. Using your (hopefully magnetized) Phillips screwdriver, secure the bar with the screws.
  8. Carefully align the ribbon cable’s connector and press gently on it so that it snaps into place. It should make a brief clicking sound.
